Motivation is the difference between success and failure.

A language is acquired when the message is understood in a low anxiety environment.

Give them Comprehensive, Interesting, and Compelling input.

We need to make sure the affective filter is lowered as much as possible.

Involve them in language acquisition activity instead of the language learning activity.

Teach the language through stories, especially personalized mini situations. Ask them to create or tell their own story in the target language. If they are not ready, the teacher will tell a story that involves the students as characters. This is personalized mini situation. How do we make this interesting? He gives a tool for that; it is called BEP (Bizarre, Exaggerated, and Personalized). Make the story bizarre. Example: I wanted to go to electronic store and purchase 3.5 (three and half) bananas. Buying banana from an electronic and that too 3.5 bananas is bizarre enough. Exaggerate: the store owner said the banana costs 3 million dollars. I asked for 25 cents and he gave it for 3732 cents. Personalized: this story though imaginary is theirs and hence it is personalized. He says this make the story developing and telling session interesting and helps them to acquire more language.

Summary

Two types of motivation:
  • Extrinsic motivation
    • Definition: tangible or intangible reward from others for good behavior or not showing bad behavior.
    • Example: words of appreciation, stickers, marks, other items, etc.
    • Strengths: makes the students happy
    • Weaknesses: short term, students may look forward to it, the desire to learn will stop once the reward is cancelled.
    • I do this because I am going to get something.
  • Intrinsic motivation
    • Definition: internal desire to do something. I do this because I want to for any number of reasons.
    • Example: our volunteers serve because they want to and they have a strong desire to serve their language.
    • Strengths: the activity itself is the best reward. Involving in the activity itself makes one happy. Self originated reward. Has long term impact.
    • Weakness: Not everyone has internal desire on everything.
    • The activity itself is the reward.
  • Ways to instill Intrinsic motivation:
    • Design the curriculum as learner centered or learning centered, to optimally challenge the learners. Refer to Krashen’s (i + 1) concept.
    • Allow the learners to decide at least one activity for themselves.
    • Implement peer evaluation, self correction
    • Make the class interesting, relevant, and personalized.
    • Implement cooperative learning, group work
    • Encourage risk taking.
    • Place higher emphasis on learning and lower emphasis on grades. Grades does not reflect amount of learning.
    • Be an enabler of learning instead of a deliverer of information.
    • Make them feel they own and control their own learning.
    • Make tests a feedback system not a comparing system.
  • Conclusion
    • Intrinsic motivation is very effective. Build a culture to encourage intrinsic motivation.
    • Several ways are available to intrinsically motivate the learners.

  1. Alfie Kohn: The 3 most basic needs of Children.

Alfie says there are 3 things the kids find interesting to them. This is ABC of motivation. Autonomy (the need to have some power over what we do), Belonging(need to feel connected to other people; sense of belonging), and Competence (need to feel we are good at certain stuff; the stuff that matters to us).

How shall we structure our programs so we motivate the learners using the ABC?

  2. We can add few more things:
    1. Task based lessons
    2. Content based lessons
    3. encourage risk taking, innovation, creativity.
