கற்றுக்கொடுத்ததில் நான் கற்றுக்கொண்டது

எல்லோரையும் போலவே எனக்கும் வாழ்க்கையில் ஏதாவது ஒரு நல்ல காரியம் செய்யவேண்டும் என்னும் எண்ணம் உண்டு. கலிஃபோர்னியா தமிழ்க் கழகத்தின்(கதக) எனது ஈடுபாடே எனக்குக் கிடைத்த அந்த வாய்ப்பு. என் தாய்மொழித் தமிழை நேசிக்கிறேன். "உன் மொழி, இனம், நாடு போன்றவைகளுக்கு உன் பங்களிப்பு வேண்டும்" என்றார் பாரதியார். என் மொழிக்கு ஒரு சேவை செய்ய கிடைத்த வாய்ப்பே இது.

புலம்பெயர்ந்த நாடுகளில் உள்ள பல ஆயிரம் தமிழர்களின் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு தமிழ்க் கற்றுக்கொடுக்கும் கதக-வுக்கும் அதன் பலப்பல தொண்டூழியர்களுக்கும், அதுபோன்ற பலத் தமிழ்ப்பள்ளி தொண்டூழியர்களுக்கும் என் இதயங்கனிந்த நன்றியையும் பாராட்டையும் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறேன்.

முழுக்க முழுக்க ஆங்கில மொழிச் சூழலில் உள்ள நிலையில் தமிழைக் கேட்கவும், தமிழ் அன்பர்களோடு நிறைய பேசிப் பழகவும், பிள்ளைகளுக்கு தமிழ் கற்றுக்கொடுக்கவும் கிடைத்த வாய்பு பற்றி மிக்க மகிழ்ச்சி.

என் கடந்த 14 வருட கதக செயல்பாடுகளில் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்தது பிள்ளைகளுக்கு தமிழ் கற்றுக்கொடுத்ததே. பிள்ளைகளுடன் தமிழில் பேசக்கிடைத்த வாய்ப்பு, அவர்களுக்கு கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக நம் மொழியைக் கொண்டு சென்றது, அந்த பிஞ்சுகளின் குழந்தைத்தனமான பேச்சு, செயல்பாடுகள், அதிலுள்ள நகைச்சுவை போன்றவை எவ்வளவு சிறப்பான வாய்ப்புகள்!

கதக-வில் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு கற்றுக்கொடுத்தேன் என்பதைவிட கற்றுக்கொண்டேன் என்று சொல்வதே பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும். இங்குள்ள பிள்ளைகளைப் பற்றி கற்றுக்கொண்டேன். மொழியை அவர்களுக்கு எப்படி கொண்டு சென்றால் நன்றாக இருக்கும் என்று கற்றுக்கொண்டேன், சக தொண்டூழியர்களின் ஆர்வம், ஈடுபாடு, தன்னலமற்ற அவர்களது தொண்டு போன்ற பல விஷயங்களை கற்றுக்கொண்டேன்.

இந்த வலைப்பூ மூலம், கற்றுக்கொடுத்ததில் கற்றுக்கொண்டது என்று என் அனுபவத்தை புலம்பெயர் தமிழர்களிடம் பகிர்ந்துக்கொள்வதே என் நோக்கம். குறிப்பாக மொழிக்கல்வி கொடுக்கும் சில உத்திகளில் நான் கற்றுக்கொண்ட சிலவற்றை இங்கு பகிர்ந்துக்கொள்ள விரும்புகிறேன்.

ஒரு மொழியைக் கற்றுக்கொடுக்க பல வழிகள் உள்ளன. அவற்றில் எந்த வழி அதிக பலனைக் கொடுக்கும் என்று என் அனுபவத்தில் கற்றதை பகிர்ந்துக்கொள்ள விரும்புகிறேன்.

ஒரு சில வழிகளை சுருக்கமாக சொல்ல விரும்புகிறேன்.

3I - Interesting, Interactive, and Involving

Interesting - The language class must be interesting. Second language acquisition is not easy. Stephen Krashen says "for the learner to acquire the language easily, their affective filters must be lowered". Making the class interesting will help lower the affective filter considerably. So, it is important that the teachers do their best to make the class interesting. அதோடு மற்ற வகுப்புகளுக்கு ஆர்வத்தோடு செல்வது போல் தமிழ்ப் பள்ளிக்கு ஆர்வத்தோடு அவர்கள் வருவதில்லை என்பது உண்மையே. எனவே வகுப்புக்களை அவர்கள் விரும்பும்படி நடத்துவது அவசியமாகிறது.

Interactive - "Less TTT" means less Teachers Talk Time. If the teacher keeps talking all the time in the class, the students will sure sleep. We need to make the class Interactive. Several techniques are available to keep the class interactive.

Involve - We need to involve the learners. How can we give them language practice if we do not involve them? Involving them is not limited to engaging the kids in the class activities alone. Professor Dr. Kumar says we have to involve them in the lesson plan development too (more on this later).

Learning Centered Approach

In his book "Beyond Methods" Dr. Kumar defines three approaches to language teaching.

• Language Centered Approach
• Leaner Centered Approach
• Learning Centered Approach

Will write about the above approaches in detail. The language centered approach does not work. Many schools are moving towards Learner centered approach. There is a better way. The Learning centered approach is effective.

The Natural Approach

I used to think why we can not teach Tamil to these kids the way we learned our first language. I did not have a clear understanding of the concept or theories of language acquisition then. In a teachers training, Dr. Kumar taught us about Language skill and Literacy skill. I read his book "Beyond Methods" to learn further about teaching second language. Dr. Kumar mentioned about Stephen Krashen's Natural Approach in his book. I also read Krashen's "The Natural Approach to Language Acquisition" further to learn more about it. This is what I am looking for. Yes, it is possible to teach the Tamil the way we learned Tamil as mother tongue. Please refer to my post  "Teach mother tongue as mother tongue in community schools".

Conclusion

Language acquisition theories are available. Let us understand the theories, hypothesis, study result etc. Once we understand how language acquisition takes place, let us follow the practical approaches that take advantage of the theories. Our next step is to make a plan, and execute it. Let us help our next generation in the diaspora world to acquire our mother tongue, Tamil, and to retain it for long time.
